About John Blaxland
Military Intelligence Officer
John Blaxland is a former senior Australian Army intelligence officer with over 25 years of service, including active service in East Timor. He has also worked in high-level Australian and U.S. intelligence organisations. He graduated from the Royal Thai Army Command and Staff College and served as Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand and Myanmar.
Academic Career
Joining the Australian National University in 2011, he is a Professor of International Security and Intelligence Studies at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. John is also currently the Director of the ANU's North America Liaison Office in Washington, D.C., where he garners unique perspectives on international issues.
John holds a Doctor of Philosophy in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, a Master of Arts in History from the ANU, and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in History from the University of New South Wales.
As a professional historian, he has authored several books, notably The Protest Years: The Official History of the Australian Secret Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Vol. II, 1963-1975; The Secret Cold War: The Official History of ASIO, Vol. III 1975-1989; and Revealing Secrets: An Unofficial History of Australian Signals Intelligence and the Advent of Cyber.
